Temeljna dejavnost ERC je zagotoviti privlačno, dolgoročno financiranje za podporo izvrstnim preiskovalcem in njihovim raziskovalnim skupinam pri izvajanju prelomnih raziskav z visokim dobičkom / visokim tveganjem. Raziskave, ki jih financira ERC, naj bi vodile k napredku na mejah znanja in postavile jasen in spodbuden cilj za obmejne raziskave po vsej Evropi.

Znanstvena odličnost je edino merilo, na podlagi katerega se dodelijo subvencije ERC za obmejne raziskave

Ocenjevanje vlog za nepovratna sredstva ERC izvajajo strokovni odbori, ki jih sestavljajo priznani znanstveniki in znanstveniki, ki jih je izbral znanstveni svet ERC. Odborom lahko pomagajo neodvisni zunanji strokovnjaki, ki delajo na daljavo.
